Top Ten Tips for Web Design

1.

Know the purpose
Before a single page is designed or written, you need to know the purpose of your website. Are you setting up the website to inform visitors or are you looking to generate leads. Whatever the purpose, ensure that all pages of the website are written and designed to achieve that goal.

2. Know your audience
Remember the site is being written for them so get to know your audience really well. Knowing who you are writing for can change the tone, style and the length of content. Customized content will have a better chance of making an impression on your visitor than general content that is not targeted towards anyone in particular.
3. Easy Navigation
Make your content easy to find. Decide if your visitors will need a search function. The de facto standard is three clicks to any content on the site but ease of navigation is determined not just by the number of clicks but how obvious the clicks were.
4. Do not innovate design
Internet surfers come across tens and hundreds of pages everyday. Their eyes are trained to look for certain things at a certain place. For example the navigation is always on the left or on the top. Do not change the standards and become a design innovator. Confuse the visitor and they will go to your competition.
6.

Content is king
This is the principal reason why your customers come to your website. Therefore it needs to be carefully thought out and planned. A sign of good content is that it is informative, well presented and up to date. There is no right or wrong length of content and it is certainly not related to the value of your service. The simple rule of content is that is needs to be short to maintain interest but it should be long enough to cover the essentials. Do not write content that goes on and on and on...

Sounds obvious but do not forget to spell check your content.

7. Easy on the special effects
Go easy on special effects. In most cases they are nothing more than annoyances and are non-condusive to the usage of the website. This can include but not be limited to Flash intro, background music, busy backgrounds, flashing signs, hit counter, etc.
8. Do your research
Study your own habits when surfing the Internet. Look at the things you like and you do not like. Then study the competition and see what they are doing and what you could do differently to attract more customers.
9. Pick the right web designer
Web Designing is not just graphic design. It is a consolidation of a number of skills including graphic design, copy writing, technology, marketing, etc. If your web designer does not understand your business drivers, how can they deliver to it?
10. Do not forget to market your website
Without traffic, no website can be successful so do not forget to market your website offline and online.
